What's The Best Years For E-320 Diesel?
Hey guys, I currently own a 2009 E-320 Bluetec with 100k it has been Awesome. My daughter took it to college so I'm looking for another with NO LUCK! I've heard that I should look at the inline 6cyl - 2006 for example. Are they better engines?
We want a body style like the 06-09 not the '10 and up. Any advice on what years are better, what to look for, problem areas etc would be appreciated!

You are not able to get I6 engine in facelift chassis, they are all V6. Facelift comes in 2007 in US cars I think, so 2006 model is possible but on the other hand you'll get SBC fitted car then... if that is not problem, go for it. Inline engine has slightly lower power, but on the other hand oil leaks are not ruining inlet swirl flap motor(s) and seal of the oil cooler is not an issue...

S350BT, GLE300d—Previously E320CDI, ML320CDI
05-06 if you can deal with the W210 appearance on a W211
I own both engines and would choose the 648 I-6 everyday of the week and twice on Sunday.
Infinitely easier to repair, no $2K oil leaks and way better torque utilization with the 5 speed transmission--No headaches.
The 642 V-6 reminds me of the 603.970 3.5L-issues, issues and more issues.
The oil cooler leaks and the turbo seal leaks kill the swirl motor, glow plugs are a outright PITA, it's stuffed into the engine bay like a ball of rubber bands, you need Xentry to change air filters or MIL/check engine trips AND worst of all, P0100, the fabled inextinguishable MIL/check engine light that Xentry has you changing MAF, EGR, cleaning EGR tubes and a new kitchen sink because it can't see the $10 B17/8 temp switch is open.
UGH!!!!

Yes, in its stock form, the OM642 V6 is not exactly trouble-free. But it does have some potential. The oil cooler seals once fixed - hardly ever comes back. As long as you know how to differentiate the turbo seal leak vs the oil cooler leak. The swirl motors can be bypassed by a resistor mod. The EGR can also be bypassed by a more expensive "reflash". Having said that - most typical MB owners will shy away from the Om642. But the tricky part is the DPF and the adblue system. Although over time - more and more companies are being setup to clean the DPF and/or eliminating it completely.
I never had to use Xentry when replacing air filters. Adaptation will fix itself over time. But yes, I agree - it takes longer to replace both air filters.

I have a 2005 I6 and love it. Performance mods, while custom, are possible. I updated the face to E63 styling (shaved all badges) and I get compliments on the car often. Wife drives it daily 150 miles and consistently gets over 35mpg. Only one oil leak so far, it was a $5 part and about 15 minutes. There is a problem with the electrical, but I believe I narrowed it to a specific part that costs about $75 and takes a few minutes to change. It's intermittent so it's difficult to diagnose. I haven't heard anyone else with the same issue, so I think it's my car specifically. I am worried about the black death issue, so I removed the engine cover and will change the injector gaskets shortly. I had to change a glow plug. Took a few minutes and didn't cost much. Overall, fantastic experience with Mercedes in a series I heard was riddled with problems. My next ride will be a S350 Bluetec. I am waiting to see the issues with the V6 hash out before I try it.

I have set up a spread sheet for 2005/6 CDI shopping for online listings. Mercedes Shopping Spreadsheet
There are currently about 150 cars with the asking price, miles, options, and link to ad.
