Any reason to be worried that MB might have tried something stupid like VW?

1922 Ford Model T / no OBD
Anyone have a pulse on what transpires next with MB internal investigation? Found out a few weeks ago that MB already prevented new orders of US models with diesel. I wanted the GLE 300d and couldn't order it. I've put in an order for a GLE 350 gas but I'd love this all to get resolved soon so I can change it to a 300d. I'm doubtful though this will be resolved anytime soon.

I just called that 888 number. Initially the agent on the phone said to talk to a local dealer but then I told her the local dealer said I should talk to MBUSA. So then she talked to a product specialist and there's no new info. She basically said the 2017 diesels haven't been "released yet". So, still a waiting game...

Diesel in the USA
I wonder what the future of diesel in the land of the free will be.
I just came into a nice used ML350 BT, while awaiting the final buy back details of my '12 VW TDI 2.0 sportwagen.
To the credit of VW, and the courts, I am pleased with the nearly finalized buy back numbers. I basically had a new sportwagen for four years and spent 7K to run 50K on it, getting almost 40 mpg. Though indeed, it was too good to be true and putting out NOx ain't cool.
The cool test for MB BT diesel engines should be pipe based, IMO, to account for real world driving conditions under load. The US EPA seems a bit sideways in their testing protocols - but I think diesel engines can be done right, and the testing should account real world testing.

Benz is adopting a belt and bracers approach to ensure they are above board ~ Dieter Zetsche is a wise man. Ausmbtech's comments are spot on. Benz has always lived by the spirit of the regulation & followed prescribed testing methods. No software fiddles. One can fruitlessly argue correlation with uncontrolled on-road norms. They are not the prescribed test method by regulators.
Living in a country where emissions of new vehicles are taxed I had always wondered how, particularly Audi could claim such class leading numbers with very average emissions control gear.
