Where is my block heater?
Hi All,
Does anyone have a pic of the block heater location for their 3.0L diesel (OM642)?
I have a Canadian car and apparently they came standard with block heaters, just not the power cord. I've looked around and don't see anywhere where it would plug in. I haven't definitively confirmed that I have one, so if anyone has some pics, that would be greatly appreciated.

Are you 100% sure? According my knowledge there is no block heater available for this model, no factory fitted or aftermarket. An aftermarket Electric coolant heater is installed in coolant water hose, if any. Then you might have webasto heater installed, of course.

Yes, I'm certain it's a factory option because I've encountered other people with ML's and GL's that have it.
I finally found a pic with one installed:
By the looks of it, I do have one installed, just without the power cord. I have a black plastic cap installed over the threaded receptacle.

Hmm.. is it really directly engine block mounted? Would be interest to know who is actual maker of it... I think your local dealer assembles them in cars as an extra option when cars are imported.
Here you can see Calix version (pipe assembly) for OM642:

There is also thermo-top brand available where is inner circulation pump.

It's only the bronze part that is the actual heater. It looks very similar to the Zerostart version that is made for the engines. It threads into what seems to be a coolant manifold, so technically, no, it's not a conventional block heater because it's not fitted into a frost plug, but it is based on the same concept - resistance wire element submersed in the coolant.
Here's the Zerostart one:
Verified that it's for my vehicle/engine from the zerostart website:

Why I am asking this, there is no distributor of block heater for that engine in Finland, only option has been that pipe assembly stuff, and we deffo need heaters here in north... but that circulation pump integrated heater has been working well according experiences shared in forum. OM626 is another tale then, it sounds that any heating attempt is messing senors and starting cause EML

It May actually be a Zerostart block heater (Parent company Phillips and Temro). Up until 2012 they manufactured block heaters in Winnipeg:

Here's a pic with the cap removed. Sorry it's not a great picture, it's hard to reach down in there. Basically uses a standard heater cord.

In gasser also? That's a good find, and I am still more positive that they are installed when cars are imported in Canada. They did similar things in Finland too. Nowadays it feels that all models are stripped so far as possible...

There seems to be two basic types of cords out there that cover off about 95% of all heaters. Ours is the round style with a threaded nut/ring. I will probably get one from eBay or Amazon.

Infrared heat gun reading 75-degrees Celsius at the heater and 35C at the top of the rad hose after 1 hour.
Appears to be working great.

I got my DEFA MiniPlug kit today to do a permanent install in my R320 CDI. It comes with all the required mounting hardware. All I have to do is attach the heater plug to it and a North American 120 male plug.

Thanks.
For anyone who has the heater pre-installed the cord can be found on eBay and Amazon:
Phillips and Temro part# 3600008
There are also variant part numbers with different cord lengths. It also fits many other vehicles and tractors.
