Experiments in diesel longevity

Bought a 98 E300 Turodiesel with 246,000 miles with engine having 60,000. Body is decent. I posted on new member area. Just took it to mechanic to solve fuel leak and have #2 glow plug extracted plus other miscellaneous items.
So we will see.

The key is preventive maintenance. Change all fluids at stated intervals or a little before. I bought my 99 E300 with 89,000 on it. I'm almost at 225k. I took the head off to replace the gasket at 180k. You could still see the machining marks on the inside of the cylinder heads. My mechanic told me that's a great sign of regular oil changes. Check your trans, diff, brake, power steering fluids. Replace them all if you don't know when the last time they were done.

Do you know what caused the first engine to expire at less than 200K miles? It should have gone double that mileage.

good question

Hi nelbur,
No I don't know what happened but I suspect the guy I bought it from didn't take care of it.
