Oil Question for 2012 GL350

After reading several posts, I went out and checked the oil level on my vehicle. It appeared low at or just above the number 3 mark on the dipstick. Should the oil level be checked when the vehicle is cold from sitting overnight or when the vehicle is warm?
What brand and type of oil is used? I'm getting Service A completed next week since the oil was last changed at 8,000 mile

Engine oil is not like transmission fluid, you can check the engine oil at what ever condition you choose and the measurement should not measurably change----for type of oil see your manual as there are all sorts of model differences. Follow the mfgs recommendation not what you are told at Ben's Wurld!!

The spec for your vehicle is MB 229.52. Here's a spec sheet for MB approved oils:

The best time to check motor oil is in the morning before engine start.
This way you have firm comparison about any change without worry about thermal expansion.
I like to keep my oil at 1/3 over min to max level as that allows me making refreshing addition down the road.
We do have oil topic somewhere here. Bad news - in USA there is only 1 oil with 229.52 specification easy available.
Easy is relative word as well. I found it in local automotive chain, but no Walmart, no Orellys carry the M1 ESP 0W30

+1

Also time allows the oil to return to the sump from the filter & valve gear.

And then you read stuff from here (yeah, I know, Ben's Wurld LOL) and wonder who's telling it straight and who isn't...
