The sound, the burble... for something so easy and relatively cheap... On a E350, I dunno... had a 2012 and it had a wonky sound at best. I had an xpipe on my C350, meh - wasn't impressed...

Interesting Mod... I'm in the same boat as MrH. Anyone do this with a pre-2012 and have a sound clip?

Hi there. Do you have any drone issues? Any chance of a video/sound clip, especially inside the car.

I did it to my w211 e500.. I got 70k miles and its an 03'. The resonator delete was a great idea I did it about 2 years ago and loved it more ever since. I have a friend with a 2006 ml500 who removed the resonator along with his mufflers, man from the outside it sounds like a damn SLR or something, but inside it really does have this drone sound when your just cruising through rpms, its annoying after a while and it doesn't sound like a benz should. So I recommend resonator removal but don't touch the mufflers. Il put the video up on youtube of my e500 and the ml500 so you can see the difference

Is it a bad idea getting this done at midas?
Also did you use stainless steel pipes ?

I went to Midas originally but they wanted $300. Decided to take it to merlin muffler, pretty much any muffler shop can do this.

+1

Also, we should be going with straight pipes rather than x? does that sound better on NA v8's?

I had this done on a pre-2012 550 as an experiment am quite impressed. I was a little apprehensive at first, sounded a bit raspy at WOT and I thought it may be a bit obnoxious so I had a friend rip up and down a parking lot so I could listen (sorry, no sound clip). Ultimately I couldn't be happier with the sound, no highway drone, subtle rumble at low rpm, and that raspy/farty AMG sound at WOT. The only bad thing is that at idle the car sounds a little weird from the rear, like there's an exhaust leak or something. Apart from not having the backfire pop during up/downshifts, it sounds similar to dads SLS, albeit a little quieter. The shop that did it put in straight pipes to replace the resonator, and only charged me 112$

Caker if you don't like the raspy and farting sound at high rpm I suggest you to do x pipe instead of straight pipe. I have played with straight pipe, h pipe and x pipe. I'd say straight pipe is the loudest and more raspy. H pipe has more of a raw sound at lower rpm and farting/raspy sound at higher rpm. I didn't feel like going high rpm with straight pipe or h pipe because simply its just too loud and the sound is a bit weird for a V8. So in the end I went with x pipe because you can really feel the gain of the low end torque and the sound is much refined and sounds great at higher rpm

Annoying sound while idle

I installed straight pipes in my 10 E550 coupe and I must say I love the sound while driving. Even sounds great when it starts up for about 30 seconds. After that it sounds like a terrible exhaust leak. It sounds even worse after driving for a while and then letting it idle. I am seriously thinking of putting the resonator back in. I park some place where I leave the car running for a minute and its sort of embarrassing. I would like to buy different mufflers but don't want to spend 3k or 4k just to get a little growl out of it and not much HP gains Not to mention I have 2 kids in college. Trying to get your wife to co-sign 3 grand on a working car might be a hard sell lol.... I have seen replacement tips on Ebay but I am not sure if that will fix my exhaust leak sound. Has anyone had this issue after pulling out their resonator? What did you do or purchase to fix without spending too much $$$.

you did a straight all the way or just replaced the resonator with a straight with the muffler still on. From what you it sounds like, you did a straight all the way. just curious.

Sorry to hear your feedback. I went with a X-pipe which I previously had great success on my X5. Start up sounds great and really enjoy the throttle. I'd imagine that the straight pipes deliver louder deeper tone, but that leaking noise at idle could really get annoying.

So yes I cut out the resonator and went straight pipes back to the factory mufflers. I think part of my problem is it baffles off those exhaust tips attached to the diffuser. I might try to get some Quad replica AMG tips welded on to see if that helps. Ebay has some but I have to figure out what actually will fit since most of them come from Asia. Might be hell to get a refund. I see them for no less than 300 bucks

Yes @ idle that noise is awful. My wife calls my ride a Choo Choo train. You can hear it from across the street. I thought I had a leak at first and I took back to the shop and they found nothing. But on the road when you get on it the sound is raw as hell. Very throaty as they say. I have seen posts here where people say it sounds like a AMG without the resonator, but I think that's a stretch............
