That sounds incredible. Does it affect performance at all?

Nice! How does it sound during normal driving? Is it invasive in the cabin?

I took my car out without mufflers today in between exhaust test fitting, with just the primary and secondary cats + X-pipe, the 'BOOM' inside the cabin was unbearable at around 2k RPM. It might be better with the main resonator in place. The NA 5.4L has loads of bass (I would think partly due to the ultra short headers before the collector pipes).

Yep, it's not very good in the cabin. Had them put back the stock exhaust today. I wouldn't recommend doing this.

I went in to get an x-pipe, and was convinced by the shop owner to do the muffler delete. Should have stuck to my original intuition....

So it seems like a resonate delete is good, but a muffler removal is too much. Thanks for the useful info guys.

Check my thread. I took off resonator and bulbs on a 14 E550 Cab. I love it.. Sounds just like an AMG ... PM me I can send you a video.

What exactly are the "bulbs". I have seen different people mention them. Is that just another name for the other set of resonators?

I would think they are the secondary 'cats' , which are essentially resonators rather than true cats.

Hmm looking back at the pictures of ksaxobeat's set up and mine.. it looks like we removed everything the same. Still interested in knowing why he doesn't have that rear "chug" noise though

question and sorry if this is a stupid one, but if one doesnt want it to be too loud, but just higher than the current sound, is it an option to remove just one resonator? or must the be removed as a pair?

My understanding is there are two sets of resonators. Most folks have removed the larger rectangular one that is rear-most. If you are worried that it is too loud, I would say don't do it at all.

They are small primary resonators (not cats).

The primary and secondary cats are together in their (same) housing.

2013 E550 Cabriolet
Just did the resonator delete, replacing it with straight pipes on my new, to me, 2013 E550 cabriolet. Awesome sound! Deeper and throat ire. No rasping. No drone. Now it sounds like it should!
Has anyone replaced the stock mufflers after doing this mod? If so what did you use and were you happy with the sound?

Got it done!

Vehicle: E550 V8 Non-Turbo
Where: Joe's Muffler + Brakes in LA
How much: $120
Verdict: Well worth it.

I've been stalking the forums for awhile, after moving over from BMW and most recently a IS350. One of the first mods was to actually hear the V8 from the rather demure E550 sound deadening. Just replaced the center resonator canister with straight pipes. The only thing to be aware of is that it does give off a slight "tractor" sound at idle, but the tradeoff to me is worth it.

Verdict Details:
  • No drone
  • Slight increase in NVH. Slightly more vibrations now apparent in the cabin
  • Sounds like stock in light acceleration and cruising
  • Low V8 grumble under moderate to heavy acceleration, with a trumpet roar under WOT
  • Can now hear the exhaust under freeway acceleration
  • Makes driving through tunnels and parking structures that much more fun

Standing sound clip:

Emission Testing vs Resonator Delete

After reading the comments, I want to do a resonator delete on my 2012 E550 Cabrio. My state, Maryland, requires emission testing every two years!
Will the delete affect the testing?

It won't affect emissions testing - as you won't be removing either the primary or secondary catalytic converters. It's simply for sound!

Thank you, and I look forward to having the mod done next week.

Can the resonator easily be put back in if I don't like the sound for whatever reason?

I love the sound of my car after the resonator delete last month, but now I've decided to buy down pipes for it so I can go to Stage 2.
I'm being told I'll need/want to add the resonator back after installing the cat-less DP. What do you guys think? Any experience?

Yes, it's just a re-weld.

2014 Black SLK 55 AMG, Black 2015 GL 550, 2011 Blue GLK 350
I just purchased a 2015 GL 550 with the 4.7 biturbo. Love the vehicle and acceleration but it is just ultra quiet. I'm considering resonator delete and straight pipes to add a much needed growl. Has anyone done this on the Biturbo V8? How is the sound at various speeds?
Thanks for any input
