There is a TSB on the clock. Look in the 212 forum where Konigstiger is kind enough to post these for the members:
LI54.30-P-056977 AUG13 – MY2014 212, 207, 218 analog clock sporadically executes a normalization sequence, replace clock with part # 2188270070. Sunlight rays can pass through the face to the inside causing the IR sensor to detect loss of synchronization the clock then runs a normalization sequence.

I hate having the dealer do anything to my cars.

I know this is an old thread, but I'm intrigued.. So we've established the clock is set by IR... but what in the car sends the IR timing signal to the clock and where the sender IR is? I'd like to find it & decode it.
It's things like this which make me enjoy Mercedes. Sure, a lesser car could run a data wire to the clock and build a clock with a bus interface on the back...but Mercedes decides to design one that only needs power. I'm sure this was done due to this being a facelift, thus allowing them to not need new wiring harnesses, but still...an elegantly simple solution.

2014 E550 Cabriolet, 2014 Porsche Cayenne Diesel
I can't say for sure but I think it gets its data from the navi system. The GPS gets precise time from the satellites. I'm sure the clock has a microprocessor and stepper motor to move the hands. I just got a new Porsche Cayenne and to set the clock you just tell the car your time zone. I know it is getting all data from the PCM (navi system). In the Cayenne every time you get in the car the Clock wakes up and the hands spin to the correct time.

Hmmm... sounds like it's experimentation time. Looks like I'll be stopping by the stage lighting store for some IR filters on my way to pick up my car later this month.
I'm not sure I'd be real happy about the clock going to sleep. Dramatic effect, maybe...but I expect a clock to have the correct time whenever I look at it.
