E550 Panoramic Sunroof Sunshade

I would like to order a 2016 E550 Coupe, but am concerned about a Car & Driver review a couple of years ago (about the 2014 model) which stated that the panoramic sunroof sunshade of that model didn't filter strong sunlight very much.

In many places in the Southwest (I am in Arizona) that could be a problem. I would appreciate hearing what actual owners have found. Was the Car & Driver opinion accurate, at least for the E coupe? The sunshade on my wife's 2014 GLK350 seems to be adequate. If the sunshade on E coupes filters less, does anyone know if that has been changed by MB (a stronger sun filter provided), or if there is an aftermarket remedy? Thanks.

When it's in the 90s ... I close my shade and it cuts out more than enough sunlight.

I find the sunshade does a very good job of filtering out sunlight. No complaints. My suggestion to you would be to go to a MB dealership and sit in either a E550 or CLS550 parked outside (they both use the same material for the sunshade) and gauge for yourself.

Thanks for that suggestion. The "Magic Sky" glass in my SLK55 roof essentially does that when it is activated, and I enjoy the light it lets in, even though it doesn't allow you to see out clearly.

That information is helpful. I thought I might have to wait for a E550C to show up at my dealership (which seems to not be nearly as often as E sedans or the CLS) to make that test.

E550 coupes are very rare around here. Couldn't actually find one to test drive anywhere in the tri-state area. So I asked the local MB dealer to test drive a CLS550, as they are identical in both engine and transmission. Although tuned slightly different. My concern was that I had test driven a E350 and found it completely underwhelming from the driving perspective. Lack of engine power, noisy engine (the constant clicking sound of what I would guess are the valve lifters), etc. The E550, on the other hand, is a completely different driving experience. You will definitely enjoy it!

For what you're looking to check out, sunshade wise, any E550 or CLS550 will do. They all use the same sunshade material.

Sorry for being off topic- but the upgrade to the V8 is a no brainer. With all the features standard on the E550, in addition to an engine with personality and amazing power. I so look forward to hearing that engine light up.

To the OP- the convertible does a great job of filtering out all the sun when closed. Can't describe how wonderful the car is with the top down. It must be way too hot, too often in AZ for a rag top. Have fun with the hunt.

You're right, direct sun on top of an already high temp, makes a convertible less enjoyable here (at least for us), not to mention complicating a skin cancer problem - which is why I am looking to replace my SLK55 with a still open-air, but sun-sheltering E class coupe! I too enjoy hearing the 550 engine in the SLK55 fire up, but I wish the E550C was offered with 4Matic so you can use its torque right off, without wondering how long it will be before you have to replace the rear tires again!

Sorry to take this off topic, but is there a way to tilt the sunroof up and still have the sun shade closed? When I want to tilt the sunroof open, I first must retract the sunshade.
Thanks
Bob

It Works

It works perfectly. Just spent a day driving through 110° CA. Couldn't work any better.
