Checking engine oil level e350

Can someone please enlighten me on checking the oil level on a '12 E350. The car is on a level ground and has been sitting for a hour or so, I pull the dipstick out (Driver's side near firewall Can. Model) there is no oil on the dipstick whatsoever, I reinsert the dipstick and now there is oil at the max. level how does this happen? This is the same scenario on my son's '11 C350, really confused

What's the VIN got to do with it?? It's just a garden variety 3.5 liter V6, non dry sump engine.

Don't have an answer for you, but I am having the same experience with "new to me" '16 E400 Coupe. After sitting, but still warm, the dipstick is dry. Then reads normal after re-inserting. Head scratcher.

That's very bizarre. I have the same car, and when I stop to get gas, I always pop the hood and check the oil. You have to wait a minute or two after shutting off the engine to let the oil drain down in order to get an accurate reading, but the dipstick never comes out dry.

On my '11 E550 coupe, if the oil is low by two its or more, the dash will display "Check Engine Oil Level at next Re-Fueling".

In addition, Here's great tutorial on check MB engine oil level:

Mine does the same thing!!! No clue as to why but I enjoy showing, and baffling, my friends. Mine is a '13 E350, US
Despite being witnessed by friends, I was thinking I just might be crazy, so I'm glad to see I'm not the only one...
I've checked it hot a couple times and the stick was wet, so apparently it needs to sit for a while. Usually I check it after it's been sitting over night, and I do it maybe once a month. So my theory is Gremlins are doing something in there with the oil, then when you pull the dipstick they go "Oh crap!" and quickly put the oil back. Crazy but what else could it be? The only other far fetched idea I have is the oil in the filter is dumping. As in it's full of oil, no air, but somehow pulling the dipstick upsets it and the oil drains out. That might be possible except for three things: That should take a bit of time to occur, plus I'd assume the system has an anti-drain back valve to prevent it. Lastly it doesn't explain why it's full if I check it warm, but instead, apparently, it lowers as it sits long enough. Wth right?
Anyone have another idea?
