Road Trip prep suggestions

I've just bought a '79 240D and I'd like to get some advice as to what I should do to prep it for a road trip.

I'll be flying down to where it is and driving it home, which is something I've done a few times in the past with other cars, but this is my first MB Diesel so I'm a bit out in the woods!

So, is there anything specific to this car I should check or do? Thanks...

Any car should have a complete inspection prior to a long trip, especially one you have had zero contact with. Especially the drivetrain, steering and suspension.

For long trips with "Betsy" my 82' 240D I take an extra wheel, a whole gallon of Mobil Delvac oil, and a new jug of anitfreeze and check the levels when I stop for a while. Also keep your eyes on the temp gauge a tick above 80 you should be fine. Check all belts for cracks. Dump in some "heet", in the red bottle, to the tank to get any water out of the system. Lastly, cross your fingers

Become a member of one of the Auto Clubs so that you can get a Tow if you need it.

Make sure the Jack, Lug Wrenc, and Spare Tire are in the Trunk and are servicable.
I carry 2 one foot square pieces of 3/4 incn Plywood (not the Plywood made from wood chips) so I have something to put under the Jack if I pull off of the Road and the Jack ends up sitting on Dirt (used so the Jack will not sink into the ground).

I have to agree with the inspection.

At least 1 set of Fuel Filters and the O-ring and Crush Washer for the Filter Bolt . People on road trips often end up with a load of contaminated Fuel and end up stuck on the Road with their Fuel Filters plugged.

Bring a Sleeping Bag incase you get stuck on the Road some where; where it is cold.

Be advised that Sellers if not liars or ignorant of the condition of the Vehicle they are selling are almost always overly optimistic when stating the Vehicles Condition.

With out exception every vehicle (since 1968) I have ever bought used after I inspected it; in my opinion needed a Brake Job.
