Talking New owner of a 78 300D

I purchased a 78 300D with 176,000 documented miles. The car has been sitting outside for about 3 years, but started right up however it does need some work. First thing I'm doing is replacing motor mounts, engine shocks, tranny mount, all fuel filters including the tank, air filter. The tranny was serviced about 3 months before being put into storage so thats not on my top priority.

I do have one problem.....the car is not hard to start, but kinda "jumpy" and have to give it some petal to get it to catch. I'm thinking its probally dirty filters, etc. But when it's fully warm, no problems restarting it.

I have to push up on the gear lever or start it in neutral, but I think it may be the bushing that needs replaced and/or do some adjustments on the linkage.

I'm going to have the valves adjusted and have the timing chain checked, engine timing and injection pump timing checked as well.

The glow plug light bulb is out on the desk. Does anyone know the bulb size of the lights in the cluster? I just as well replace them all. For all I know I could have a bad glow plug and that might be a part of my starting issue.

Is there anything else I should look at with this model? I had a 115 240D, but that was years ago so I kinda have lost my Diesel knowlege, but it is coming back.

I agree that the glow plugs are most likely the problem with start up. Instrument cluster illumination uses 3w 2821 bulbs, the indicator/warning lights use the smaller 2721 bulbs. Here's a list of lightbulbs used on a w123:

Test each glow plug with test light, I take the wires off first. You don't have to remove all the plugs, just the bad ones.

Glow Plugs

If you have the loop type of plug, would recommend the pencil type can get from Peach Parts for a little over $15 each, just replaced all 5 of mine in my 77 300D.
