Want to overhaul A/C system... Where to start?

So although I know my way around under the hood, I'm a newb when it comes to A/C systems. As of now the system is not charged, I'm sure has a leak, and am not sure if the compresor even works. So rather than just go piece by piece trying to figure it all out, I'm considering replacing the whole system.

Tried to search posts on the benz forums but am striking out. Does anyone have any advise on this? Perhaps convince me to repair the existing system? Is this something that is worth attacking on my own or just bite the bullet and bring it to a shop?

I'm in North Jersey so if anyone knows of a shop within 100 miles (NY/NJ/PA) that knows the systems on these cars I'd like to know.

All feedback is appreciated!

Answer

Replacing the full system can easily run $3k - $4k at a shop.

Repair of the system at a shop should be less than $1,300.00 USD.

Here are some shops that may be local for you.
