OM617.952 into a 1980 Chassis with OM617.912
My 1980 300D finally kicked the bucket… it decided it was time to lock up. I will never let this car go; Too much history. I have thought about an overhaul or a replacement. One of my chief complaints about this vehicle, it is just sluggish… since birth. I was thinking, since I am considering the replacement route, that maybe I could replace the OM617.912 with an OM617.952. I have heard and read that the 912 cannot be converted to a turbo. When I was looking into used 952’s the seller indicates it will only fit the post 1982 W123’s. Weird because it sure seems when these model year cars are parked next to each other they could be twins. So my question is… If there is a Will is there a Way? Thanks!

The engine is nearly identical externally. Best to get a parts car and swap straight over.
Few things, like the AC lines, will need to be made custom or adapted from the newer car.

1979 Mercedes 300D with newer 300D turbo engine, otherwise I drive a Toyota Tacoma
Not sure but I think that was done to my car
Hi - I am still double checking, but I think what you are wanting to do is what was done to my car. It is a 123W 300D that had the engine from a newer 300CD turbo (It think it is a 1984 OM617.952 engine) installed. Maybe some of the transmission was also changed out. I am at work so I have to look at the receipts when I go home.
