I started having a problem with my 1991 300E (223,000 miles). It died on the road. Starts OK and runs for about 30 seconds and then dies. Will retart immediatly and run for about 30 seconds before dying again.

I was able to limp home 5 miles by constantly restrting it after stalling.

Any help on where to start looking would be appreciated.

Check your fuel filters. If you have a 103 engine, check all the way to the inlet fitting/filter to your fuel distributor.

mine is the same thing got a brand new transmission at 260k miles by the way on the way to las vegas from california the car died fuel filter and decided to change the pump to from the junk yard and it was it

So the fuel pump was the problem?

My filter is about 1 1/2 years old.

When the ignition is first turned to the "On" position the fuel pumds should be running for a couple of seconds. Is this correct?

yeah turn it to on you should here it for like 5 seconds and so they are pretty loud not that loud but kind of luod on a house garage. cheaper ones are in a junk yard i got mine for like 12 bucks in cali. and the fuel filter brand new is like 28 bucks at auto zone while you at it change your plugs because it looks like you are running lean and might have busted them. yeap i went through some like 3 sets of plugs just to find the right one and the clearance is .032 - .036

Your fuel pumps should run for a bit with the key in the on position.
This will prove the fuel pumps.

However, once the car starts a tach or speed signal (yellow/green wire) is required to keep the pumps running.

The two critical points are the OVP and Fuel Pump relay behind the battery.
Check the fuses on the OVP.
Both relays are inexpensive to replace.

Still a good idea to change fuel filter if your not sure of how long it's been in service

Picked up a entire fuel pump assembly from a 1989 300E for $100. Replacing it was easier than I expected and it now is running fine.

guys...
the same problem i had.
there is a sensor on the cranck shaft i think at the very end towards the gearbox.check it.
in my case it was loose and dissplaced

nice to hear that although you can get some good once on the junk yard for like 25 bucks i dont think you have one close to you. drive safely.

just to add it just amaze me on how nimble the W124 are so fun to drive and comfort is top notch
