w210 E55, w124 wagon
After reading thru this discussion, i've decided to (finally) upgrade the audio, in stages, for a 94 wagon with a total budget +-$1200
1. Rainbows for dash, running off current head unit (Parrot Asteroid)
2. Replace 5.25's in front doors for better midbass and power with multi-ch external amp (rainbow drivers?)
3. Add sub, maybe JL Audio 8W3v3 MicroSub (it fits between 2nd and 3rd rows when in use)

For the amp, thinking arc audio xdi 805 or JL xd700/5.

Looking for a clean sound with some tight, low end that i can occasionally play at volumes i can feel. When solo I listen to artists like Skream, Megaladon, Outkast. With the 4yr old in the car we listen to the likes of Queen, Eddie Vedder, Velvet Undergound.

Suggestions for midbass drivers or any of stages would be highly appreciative.

The front door midbass speakers are not 5.25", they are an oddball metric size. There are no drop-in replacement that fit correctly, that I'm aware of. That's why most people either keep the factory door speakers (which work well with the factory amps), or go with custom doorboards like Jehnert's twin 6.5" setup. Since you're ditching the factory amps, you'll have a pretty major job ahead of you... let us know how it works out!

Do you mean the Alpine changer had a fiber output, which converted to 10-pin copper? That would make sense. The factory head units (1432 from 1991-93 and 1492 from 1994-95) had no provision for fiber optic connections. The changers were dealer-installed options, btw.

I have installed 5.25" pioneer 3 way speakers in my W124 sedan doors. Not a drop in fitment, took me a while to get it done.

Are you using the stock amps to power these?

Rainbow audio has a 4.75 inch biax for dash and rear deck mount. Few dealers but they appear to be designed for w124 from outset . . . not cheap, I expect, and you still have to come up with something for the doors.

I came up with a "cheap" solution to the crappy factory setup. I bought a head unit with 4x40 output, pulled all bass out of the factory speakers with the head unit, and installed a box with a single 10" sub and an amp. Cost me $1000 installed and sounds amazing. My boss/friend borrowed the car last week and he is still talking about the stereo in my 124. I'm out of town but I'll go into more detail if anyone is interested.

I downgraded from my E500 to a Tesla . I loved my 1994 E500 driving experience ...nothing like it. The Tesla is faster but it isn't the same thing at all, and long road trips take a lot longer now.

I do have a bunch of extra audio gear which was for a E500 Limited .

Set of Jehnerts, ($500) set of scan speak 12M midranges $300 ...and a bunch of McIntosh gear - but a separate cross over box and EQ POWER SUPPLY tons of Mcintosh EQ modules and controllers. Call on that 347-263-7238

Heres the deal deal of the century. I'm selling my Z box rear deck custom fiber glass subwoofer box for the th guy who can pick it up in 3 days or less for $99. Cost me over $500 and originally over a thousand bucks.

Z-box is gone. I still have the Jehnert’s

I’ll do a great deal on the Jehnert’s - just $400 for the door boards and crossovers . You will not need a sub woofer if you have this.

If you need drivers fir tgem it then let me Best sound quality when you buy the Jehnert set up with the 12 M scan speak midrange and Jehnert tweeter . Those drivers are an additional $490 USD and I can include extra tweeters
