I'm getting a little bit of engine vibration at idle. The engine itself is running fine, so this is not a misfire type of thing. Idle speed is perfect. It feels like just the normal engine mechanical vibrations are being transmitted more heavily that they should be. At any other speed, everything is fine. I would suspect the engine mounts, but before I go to all that trouble, does anyone have any experience / thoughts about something like this? It's really not a big deal, but little things like this tend to bug me (machines, especially fine German machines, should run smoothly).

Are the vibrations only present in D?
If so, try putting it in R and see if the vibrations are still there.

Usually one engine mount goes first, which is the one that gets the most pressure while in D (I can't remember which one it is) and the one in R gets less pressure over it's period and hence is generally in better condition and does not fail as soon as the other one, hence in R it should be smoother while idling.
This was the case in my 124. The idle was quite bad in D, but after the mounts were changed it idled very nicely

Sounds like your engine mounts need to be replaced. I was getting rough idling too, I had to change my engine mounts at 28k km. If you tend to drive hard or accelerate hard, it'll wear out your engine mounts sooner.

Replace the front transmission mount at the same time as Engine mounts.

I ordered all three mounts (2 engine, 1 trans) today. Sprung for OEM replacements. I also did one additional test - in D or R, I got vibration and got it about the same level in each. In P or N it's smooth as glass. This tells me (based on your advice above) that both mounts are toast. I will post the net result.
