Transmission calamity. :(

My wagon has decided that it doesn't like to run in 3rd or 4th gear, it starts to shudder or "hop" violently and the engine also spikes and drops rpms. When I try putting it into neutral it flat out dies. I know it's due to have a transmission service (flush, filter etc.) and it's got around 305,000kms on it, but I've got no idea where to start as far as diagnosing the problem. I may even pay the stealership shop rate to get it looked at. Has anyone else gone through this before? And how did you go about repairing it?

.....oh yeah..... It's an 87 4matic.
