w124 95 e300d smoke coming from dash, plastic burning smell, fan on high, heat on max

Any body seen a cooked climate control unit like this before? any ideas what caused this?

Check and see that your fuses were not replaced with fuses of the wrong amperage rating. Take special note of the fuse in the small black flip top box near the drivers shock tower. This strip fuse controls the blower motor.

That was caused by an internal short or loosened soldered connection. My experience is that the soldered joints loosen/crack over time. When increased amperage flows through this insufficiently soldered connection it gets very hot. Kinda like pulling 15Amps through a tiny 24AWG wire would.
