1995 E320, 1998 SL500

My 1995 E320 (with 136,000 miles and in excellent shape) would not start. They replaced a fuel pump. The new fuel pump was very loud for a few days and is now sounding normal. Why would a fuel pump sound abnormally loud for a while?
