W124 - Rear Boot/Trunk Lighting Issue

Hi. So I just came across and issue with the two lights in the boot/trunk of my 94 Estate. They were working fine however suddenly I've been having some issues.

When I open the rear hatch door the lights don't come on or sometimes flicker. I thought it could be a sensor of some sort or possibly the wiring harness as I heard they go bad.

I did however try the switch on the dash in both positions (Always on/Rear Door on) and the lights do in fact come on.

So, is there a sensor that could be gone which doesn't realize the rear hatch is open or could it be anything else? Rear wiper etc. still works so I assume it's not the harness? Thanks

As with all things Mercedes, your rear assist system is complicated and the two micro switches (A12/s1 and A12/s2) which also control the rear lamps are integral to A12(Tailgate closing assist)---however the documentation is not clear as to whether the switches are available(there are two versions, but when you go to the dealer with you VIN you will see-----Have your mechanic locate wiring document 72-265, it will become all clear.
