1987 Merc W124 M103 eng. Starts, runs for a few seconds and stops. The air-flow sensor can be pressed down easily for the first 12mm or so but then the pressure needed is more. It can be pressed way down and will always come back up again----it is not sticking at any time. I've not heard anyone mention a "two-stage" pressure sensor. Is there a fault here?

W124 300E starting problems.
Fixed. I changed the fuel filter and sawed the top of to find a very dirty, blackened, filter element, but that felt good because I'd actually achieved something.
Still wouldn't start though.
So I looked into the fact that the air sensor could be pushed down easily for 12mm or so and then it got harder to push. So, I turned the adjuster into the rich direction until that soft area was almost gone, turned the key and it started first time! I let it idle until it was up to temperature when I gave it a further quarter turn to rich and it is now so smooth it's unbelievable. I wonder if quarter of a turn, rich first, would help all those cars out there that threaten to stall, the leaner direction would also be an option. At least you are trying this first before you buy all the relays and additional air devices so often mentioned---and it's unlikely you will lose your starting point with the mixture screw! I love the site by the way.
