'88 300E Fuel Issues

Hello All!

This is the second thread in my series to restore my grandfathers 1988 300E. After I got the car shipped here, I had a tune up done because the car had been sitting for 6 years with less than 1/4 tank of fuel. I was able to drive 5 miles before the problems started. The car had black smoke coming out of the tail pipe (I've been told its running rich) and the car dies every time I come to a stop. I have to keep my foot on the pedal to keep the car over 2k RPM otherwise it will die the second I let off the gas. I've been told by my father in law that it also is misfiring, since he specializes in American cars he took it to his specialist who works on his MBs. It is at a specialist now, but he said he wont be able to diagnose it until the end of the week . Anyone have any ideas as to what is going on? I just need to be prepared for what I might hear, as I don't have a lot of money to fix the car.

If he knows the cars systems the first thing he will do is use a pulse counter to interrogate the system for faults----post the list!!

If he shows you a blood pressure cuff---then disown you Dad for the reference and take the guy off your Xmas card list!!

Put a tin of fuel RED X cleaner in the tank and give it a good run.

Due to my recent experience, I would suggest you replace the fuel filter first.
How many miles has it done?
