Here is an example of what a bad catalytic converter looks like (removed from my '90 300TE). My 300TE only has 153K miles, and she was relatively sedentary for approximately 9 years before I recently rescued her. I believe the previous owner only used her for short trips as well. A bad catalytic converter can be very difficult to diagnose. The symptoms will take you in different directions, but in the end you will finally arrive at the catalytic converter. Good luck.
