Kickdown failer

Hello
Ok so I have had this car for a while it is a 1985 model recently the kickdown hasn't been working properly when I press the kickdown it feels like the car is choking all sound but no action and the RPM rises very slowly and sticks between the 4th and 5th now I tried driving without pressing on the kickdown the same things happen when I I try to go full throttle whereas if go half throttle on the gas peddle it smoothly drives with slow acceleration also if I try to downshift with the transmission it doesn't do the job correctly so any help?
