Not an expert myself, but most likely one of the plastic parts broke and not functioning. Should be straightforward and not terribly costly replacement and repair.
Not with my MBs, but had a similar problem with my Porsche years back.

Sound like the cable has slipped, try take a look at the motor on the left hand side inside the boot. If it is not the cable then you can try manually turning the motor by wrench to close the sun roof first. There are many DIY resources on fixing the sunroof. There are also repair kit available on eBay.
