'94 E320 Cabriolet: Tailpipe - Smoke (burnt smell)
After driving for 20 min, smoke comes out and smells like burnt popcorn
Odd issue - possibility exists - field mice condominium in muffler just before tailpipe; using a camera probe later this week, expecting to have to start replacing muffler system section by section if can't find the issue - unfortunate as it's original, still sounds great and looking to sell soon.

If the engine respiration does not show other anomalies like sound apart from smell, I would let it run a few more days in the normal way to see if the symptom persists before doing anything about it. A possibility could be, as you mentioned, just tiny creatures entering the tailbox and the smell came from the cremation of such. You may also wish to find out if the exterior of the exhaust pipe and tailbox have any signs of contact with plastic, rubber or similar products. I had a Volvo many years ago, and after detecting bad smell I took it back to the dealer only to find that a huge plastic bag had melted on the bottom of the tube and the tailbox.
