Oil Leak In 2001 E320

i bought our 2001 E320 approx 4 months ago. at first my wife heard the squeeky noise from the steering and thanks to this forum i got plenty of info and had the dealer fix the problem. Now after the car is parked in the garage overnight i notice a small area appox 10 sq inch dabbed with whats look like motor oil. at first i ignored it but it happened again. i checked underneath and it seem like the oil pan gasket is leaking. this assumption is true if i think the oil pan gasket is black square shape and is immediately behind the transmissionhousing? i just had the oil cahnge also. now in futue can i change the oil myself by unscrewing the nut from the oil pan and draining it and change the oil filter which is located on top of the engine? thanks for all your help.

Check FIRST to make sure what oil is leaking....Engine or trans oil.
If Engine oil check the front of the engine..chain tensioner seal..its a crush washer..seen several leak...If trans oil check the connector for the wire harness at the pass side of the transmission..The Oring seal leaks..seen several leak..

Oil color could also help to locate leak - Transmission fluid or oil is generally red if has been serviced regularly.

The pan you speak of...if it is aft of the transmission bell-housing, sounds like it transmission pan - not engine oil pan.

Cheers

well i finally took it to the dealer. after the repair, still under starmark, the invoice states SPACER, TRANS FLUID, LOCK PIN; i have not noticed any leaks. the service rep said it was a rubber seal or something. do you think they changed the trans fluid also they may had to correct?

I would doubt that they changed the transmission fluid. It sounds like the spacer is what was replaced, then they added fluid to top off the transmission. The lock pin is in the cap to the transmission tube and is broken when the cap is removed. This is the indication to the mechanic that someone has removed that cap. The MB transmission fluid is not your ordinary Dextron and only MB fluid should be used. Any other fluid can cause premature failure in the clutch packs thus if the lock pin is broken, the transmission fluid is checked very carefully for comtamination.
