Red face bought car blues

i just bought a 1990 190e 2.6 head gasket was blown and it has been
sitting for 6-8 months i have all the gaskets etc. but the main prob is
the piston walls have rust on them. some one told me to put tranny fluid in
it and let it soak the clean it before putting it back together. can anyone give me some ideas? will this hurt the engine or is there a special trick to it?
any help?

things with and without wheels
run a hone through it with wd 40 or diesel fuel and wipe down clean.

Wait! If you don't have the block out of the car and completely disassembled, DON'T run a hone in it. You have to be able to clean the residue out thoroughly or you'll circulate abrasives and metal particles; not pretty.

If you don't have the engine competely torn down and out of the car, then the best thing I can think of to use is Marvel Mystery Oil. Dribble it down the cylinder walls and then let it soak in, wipe out all the rust you can before you rotate the engine (by hand, obviously) to continue the process.

Good luck!
