Straight6 fuel economy

What kind of fuel economy are you guys getting?

My dad's 97 E320, with the old straight six never sees the highway and has extremely low mileage at 21,000kms (probably not even broken in yet). I went with my dad to refuel last night and he was at half tank, but ran 300 kms with it.

That's about 10L / 100km in pure city driving (he never takes the highway).

Much better than what I usually do on the C240 in mixed driving!

This thing has left me perplexed, as the old inline6 engines were supposed to be the gas guzzlers.

If my calculations are correct, that turns out to be 23 miles per gallon.
Seems very good. Especially if he drives mostly in the city.
I have a straight 6 and I drive about 80 precent highway and get between 19 - 21 miles per gallon.
By the way, what method of calculating the mileage did you use? Could be some discrepancies.

Where did you hear this? My Inline 6 gets better fuel economy than my newer V6.

Gas Mileage - '96 E320

My '96 E320 is an in-line 6 cylinders with 65,000 miles (just broken in... hahaha). I normally get 21-23 driving around city and 29-31 mpg on highway, which is very good for a good size car. Its mpg is better than my son '97 Maxima

Hello everyone
I have 1996 e320 with in line 6Cyl, I bought the car with 200K miles on it, it was in very poor shape (performance wise) Plugs were too old and one coil was working half way, air filter looked like never been touched, etc,
I replaced the plugs, all 3 coils, and new filters (air, oil and cabin) start to notice great difference in MPG ,when I got the car , the down town drive was average 12 MPG and 19 high way, now I get average of 19 down town and almost 30 MPG highway, new set of tires got me another saving on the MPG,
I think it all depends on how you take care of the car, how you drive and how you keep close eye on all the basics.
I also noticed if I use 93 octane vs, 91 that will give me about 2 to 3 extra MPG (high way).
This all I want to share with you, hope that will help
