4Matic Front CV Joint

It must be that time of year when things start breaking.

My front CV boot is cracked and throwing grease all over the place. Has anyone w/a 4matic replaced theirs? What was the cost?

I noticed both were cracked last fall and after searching every where for a boot kit ( unsuccessfully) I had my local indie replace...288.00 labor and 72 per boot...yes that is 72 dollars each for the boot! I have replace many cv boots , axle shafts and the joints themselves on vw's so this came as a shock to me.

I have been concerned about this since I am at 110k miles now and was wondering if it would be OK to replace all front CV boots as preventative maintenance. I find your cost to be rather reasonable as compared to replacing the axle for $1200 as I read on another thread if a boot goes bad.

My boot has broken -- hence the grease. I'm hoping the axle can be saved. I've driven a total of about 5 miles since it started throwing grease. No clunking/clicking noises (yet) as is typical for CVs on their way out.

I actually did one of these not too long ago. It was the front passenger outside CV boot. Once you get the axle out it may take about 30-45 minutes to get the axle apart, cleaned up and rebooted. It's a pretty simple and straightforward job. Just don't pop the CV joints apart incorrectly or it can be a pain in the butt getting the small ball bearings back into place.

Great news, $230 is excellent.

I took mine to the shop this morning and they found one has just cracked and started spitting grease. So just on time. It will be $290 per side parts and labor. Not too bad.
