Cylinder numbering on an E420 V8 engine?

Hello,

Our '97 E420 started running rough this afternoon, which tripped on the Check Engine light. This happened about a year ago, and it was a dead ignition coil. My OBD II code reader says that this time it is number 2 cylinder that's misfiring. I had bought a spare ignition coil last time, so I'm prepared to fix it tonight. Only problem: I can't remember how the cylinders are numbered on a Benz V8 engine!

Starting at the front of the engine, I'm guessing that straight down the driver's side to the back is 1-3-5-7, and the passenger side is 2-4-6-8. If this is correct, then the first ignition coil on the passenger side is the bad one. Am I right? Or can anyone get back to me right away with the correct cylinder numbering location?

I appreciate your help.

Regards,
Dave in Woodland Hills, CA

1234

5678.
pass side front is one, drivers side front is 5
first cylinder is beginning of firing order. Thus the position of the cam sensor at that position.

have you washed the engine recently?Ran through a big puddle of water.Swap the coil to another cylinder to test if the mis moves.Coils rarely fail.Check the connector.swap the coil first.
How much did you pay for the coil?is it bosch.

Ohlord,

Thank you for your quick reply. To make sure I'm clear, number 2 cylinder would then be the second one from the front on the passenger side. Correct?

Regards,
Dave

Ohlord,

Just saw the second half of your first post. Haven't washed the car or run thru a puddle. When I did this last year, the suspect coil was indeed dead, as the problem followed the coil to another cylinder. I bought two genuine Bosch coils for around $58 each as I recall, and kept the spare for the next one to fail. I'm on my way outside to swap out #2 coil with my new one.

By the way, I bought the coils from a wholesale auto parts house that I've been buying German car parts from for years. A great, family owned and operated place called BMA in Glendale CA: www.bmaparts.com

Genuine parts, great prices, and superb customer service. Toll free number
(888) 262-3911. Started with two brothers Yves and Patrick Bright along with their mom. Now have other employees who answer the phones, but the brothers are still there running things. Highly recommended!
