Angry Rear hatch lock - sticking!

1998 E320 wagon.... Rear hatch/ tail gate closes fine, latches tightly. BUT - upon opening, the latch gets stuck part way. Seems like it disengages only halfway. After a few tugs, it opens OK. Got a fix for this?? It's pissing me off!

either the cable is binding (remove and lube, check for kinks), or

the latch simply needs adjusting. if you look at the trunk lid locking mechanism
you will see simply Torx fastners....same for the strike plate inside the trunk.
easy loosening and adjusting. remember to adjust the simple plastic 'screws'
(black plastc about .75" diam) which function as door stops.

My hatch was sticking also. I purchased a set of Torx fasteners but could not figure out which direction to adjust the strike plate (towards the front of the car or the back). I was afraid that doing it the wrong way would mean I could not open it again to re-adjust it the right way! I settled the matter by dry-lubing with silicon grease the strike plate and the exposed part of the locking mechanism. Worked the first three times I tried it.
The dog is happy as he can now go for rides without fear of being stuck in the truck!
