A/C problem 98 E320

I'm having an a/c issue a new compressor has been installed and the clutch won't engage I was told as long as the EC light is on it won't i've tried the self test but the display is bad and I can't make out what it is reading. I've tried to reset it and it won't I was wondering if the controkl unit could be bad.

You are correct, if the EC light is on because of a fault the compressor will never start. If I were you, I would do the process again and at the end "clear the faults" surely you will see the FF.

Once you clear the faults the EC lamp should go out and the compressor should come on, however you have to find out why the EC light came on(no refrigerant maybe or bla bla bla) because it could very well come back on!!
