saintz-
according to my notes, the module you've pictured is the radio amp. take a
look at this link. it seems to indicate that the receiver may be near the rear
view mirror....at least the antenna is. leaves me scratching my head for now
until we reconcile this.

85 300D(the trusted), 97 E420(the ticketed)
My 97 E420 only works form 10-15 feet at best. My year has the sensor in the rearveiw mirror and my owners manuel said it only works up to 20 feet. Now that my windows are tinted it seems like it only works when I'm like 5 feet from the car. It could be my batteries are low but I'm not gona change em till the remote stops working

I have both! One of mine was damaged and changed by the dealer few years ago and I got a chrome one. I can't tell any difference. Both work at best (max) from 10 feet.

Hey Saintz!
Well,
the post you share are for the earlier models (you can see in the pic, has the M104 engine 6L.) the earlier models comes with RCL control module & combination control module with the infrared sensor in the rearview mirror, but this is the first stile key (foldable with IR)The 99+ models comes with RF keys, the RF receptor are locted in the rear windshield with the amplificator in the C pillar..
Conjunction with the confort feature IR for windows & roof..The AMP for the audio system are located inside the trunk in the left quarter panel, but you can unplug the amp with no faults in the remote key RF.

Fabio, my understanding is the amp in the C pillar is used for radio amplification, both for the RF key and for the AM/FM radio. Separate from the actual audio amp.
Anyone with IR but not RF performance from your key, check the C pillar.

How did you swap the guts of the all black key to the new chrome key?
I saw that someone said you need a chrome key without the keyless go.... looks like a nice update mod on the key.
Thanks,
-Nigel

As for distance, be sure that your batteries are fresh and fully charged. A 3v coin cell should show approx 3.3v when new. I recently got some Duracell CR2032's from an seller on Amazon and when they didn't last I checked the remaining ones. They were all 3.0xx v. After putting in a known good battery I get about 90' (line of sight) even with the garage door closed! YMMV.
