I've never seen it stated and AFAIK the W210 (in US) didn't have a 'towing' package as an option. Your OM has the max load for the car.
I have read that some here and in Europe have added hitches. I guess you just have to take your chances. The engine/transmission is strong so occasional, light towing probably won't cause a problem but will increase the wear on them.

I think the usual max load for a sedan is 1900kg. My wagon (as almost all E-class wagons) has 2100kg.
Some are fitted with extra oilcoolers for the transmission when a hitch is mounted.
I can't really see why MBUSA can't give you that information, over here you hardly see an E-class without a hitch, and especially wagons are very much used ahead of caravans, due to their high tow-capacity, and the self-leveling suspension.
Below is a couple of images from last years summer vacation, at home, up in northern Norway doing something good (scrapping Toyotas) and the last, through the Swedish 'outback' .. :-)

I tow my bike to the track every weekend for a 150 mile round trip, I don't even feel that theres anything behind me, and with the self leveling rear suspension it sits perfectly level.
I have a Bosal tow hitch, its rated for 2100kg or rougly 4600lbs, not that I would ever tow that much. My setup with the bike is under 1000lbs.

'01 W210 E320 CDI
As others stated above; 1900kg for the sedan, 2100kg for the wagon. I had the rare case of getting a '01 320CDI which never had a towbar installed (no holes drilled in the chassis) and installed a Bosal bar myself to tow a 750kg bagagetrailer on vacations through Europe.
The risk in getting a used W210 with a towbar is you never know what they towed with it! My car WILL tow a 3000kg horsetrailer no problem but the tranny gets cooked!!!
