96 steering wheel adjustment problem
Hi ever since i bought the car about 2yrs ago the steering wheel adjustment hasn't worked. The seat control adjustments on the drivers door works but seems to work backwards on the seat. when i pull back to me the bottom seat button the seat moves forward instead of back. Also there is no sound or any kind of movement for the steering wheel. I bought a good used steering motor and hooked up the wiring but still doesn't run. I also checked the control panel on the door with another one and still the steering doesn't work and the bottom seat control does the same thing, goes back when you push the button forward and when you pull the button towards you it moves back. So i was wondering if the seat memory under the seat also control the steering wheel adjustment and would it run the seat control in the opposite way its been doing or is the seat adjustment normal? Is there a fuse for the steering wheel adjustment?

First disconnect/reconnect the battery and resync everything. If it works, then you probably have a canbus module fault somewhere. If it fails within a week, then you may want to get the canbus scanned to find the fault.
If the reset doesn't work, it could be a fuse or switch issue.

i'd rather not disconnect the battery otherwise i'll lose my code for the radio. What is the canbus module and where is it located? Where is the fuse located for the steering wheel switch?

Call your local MB dealer to get your radio code. You'll need it. You'll also need the owners manual for your car. It has neat stuff like where fuses are located. Below is a link to get you started on what "can bus" is. Disconnecting the battery is like rebooting a computer when Windows has a problem.

Didn't know the canbus would be so complicated, wow. And THANK YOU DSMITH!! I called the dealer but they were busy so i'll just call later on but your advice on disconnecting the battery and letting it power down (lol, like windows) worked great! I now have total adjustment of the steering wheel! Another satisfied customer.

sorry to revive an old thread, but i have the EXACT same problem as the OP. seat working in reverse and no steering wheel adjust. Im just wondering how long u had to leave the battery disconnected and also if this fixed the seat buttons being backward in addition to the steering wheel adjustment? also, how long did this last? did u need to reset since? thanks

Yea i had to disconnect the battery but before you do make sure you have your radio code cause you'll need it to unlock your radio. I had it disconnected for about 5 minutes and after that it did reset the controls and now they all work great. Haven't had to reset it since. Hope this works out for you. :-)
