Who can fix my pixel-display problem?

OK, I've read all the posts on fixing this, the missing pixels in temp and time, and I'm not ready to take out the dash myself and fix it, as easy as it may be -- I'm mechanically challenged.

So I'm in the northern Chicago suburbs. Anybody know anyone up here -- independent mechanic or otherwise -- who could fix this? Willing to pay, but not the $1200 tab I've read about.

Thanks in advance.

My mechanic in Northern VA said that they used to know of a place that sold reconditioned ones, but they had such a high failure rate they went out of business. Also he wouldn't do the installation because (as I best recall) only the dealer posessed the right equipment to code it, keep the mileage correct, etc. If you find someone who thinks they can fix it, be sure to check them out very carefully or you may end up back at the dealer undoing any mistakes they might've made. In the end I had to bite the bullet with the dealer, but it's worked fine now for nearly 3 years.

There is an independent in Mundelien called Autobahn Motorworks. His labor rates are similar to dealers but he is much more flexible and won't push work you don't need. Ask for Tony he is the owner.

If need be, you can also buy a used cluster off eBay or elsewhere to use while your correct cluster is repaired. I don't think they are terribly expensive. Looks like you can find them for under $200. Then you can sell it back on eBay again when you get yours fixed! Of course, it probably makes sense to keep your existing cluster with the correct miles. An alternative is to just try to find a cluster with similar miles.

Sorry -- just to add some thoughts since I just re-read and realized you don't want to DIY. My gut feeling on the easiest way to get it fixed the "right" way is to have a mechanic pull it so you can send it off to BBA (see link above) for repair. Then, either have mechanic keep the car until it comes back or put a used one in on a temp basis so you can use the car. And then of course you have to pay the mechanic to put the repaired cluster back in.

That all may not be worth the cost. So a cheaper option is to find a used one with similar miles on eBay or elsewhere and pay a mechanic to swap it in.

If you are going to find one on ebay for temp or perm use, you should first read up on advice for buying the right part from threads on swapping an instrument cluster on this and other forums.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is going to be a local place that can fix dead pixels and BBA may be one of the only options for repairing the existing cluster.

Beckmann Technologies in Durham, NC does them. I have used them for various service for many years. I had the cluster for our 2000 C280 done by them. Fast service. It doesn't take much to pull the cluster. Simply 2 hooks, drag it from the dash, remove 2 plugs and your ready to pack and ship it.

Old replies don't mean the member is dead.
Even if he sold the car and is not coming to the section anymore, he might have email notifications and PM should always reach him.
Have seen posters update even after 5 years.
