How can I tell?

A prior owner of my '99 E320 lists in the service records a new transmission being installed. Is there any way to know for sure? I do not know this prior owner.

Yes do as you are doing(datacard) ---check transmission serial number as built(262202) vs installed serial number(xxxxxx)

If new tranny was done at a dealership, then...
Take the VIN to the dealer.
Ask if they can confirm such work.

If they're nice, they'll let you see the service report.

Or pull a carfax, which you should anyways.
