1996 E320 Transmission - Sudden No Fwd / No Reverse ?
Ok,, new here but have a puzzler... Car drove perfect to the store, then when I came out.. it won't go AT ALL ! Starts fine, shifts to every gear, but nothing! Like permanent neutral?
I jacked it up in the parking lot, looked under to confirm shift linkage is moving. Even put it on jack stands, and no movement from the back wheels,, except a little slight effort to spin in L1.
Had it towed to transmission shop and they said it needed rebuilt. ($2700) I call BS ! I don't buy that for a sudden total failure such as this... Towed it back home and trying to learn the car better to find the answer.
(Had a bad wire harness a year ago to the neutral safety switch that I completely rebuilt and replaced the neutral switch) its' been working perfect since then.. I know that model has bad (defective) factory wiring, so I fear a similar problem with another harness.... Maybe?
Any help appreciated... Thanks, Tryon

Out Of Control!!
I have no idea how you will test this without the proper diagnostic set however check the gear selector switch. Then do the simple stuff---fluid levels, linkages, smells.
Are there any unusual lights on within the dash!!

No codes known?
Thanks for the reply..
I have an OBDII code reader, but I suspect it won't work for a '96. No lights on the dash, unless the bulb is out? Unknown.... Fluid is full, not burnt, smells ok. Confirmed shift linkage is moving the shaft into the transmission, with gear selections, all positions.
Do you know how to check for codes on this model? What is the process, or do I need a different code reader?
Maybe the pump went out in the transmission???, but strange it went from perfect and working, to totally inoperative (won't go fwd or backwards in any gear) with just one time turing it off and restarting it a short time later? Im stumped, but I will be taking it apart to investigate soon...
I will explore it more this weekend, I have to work the rest of the week.
thanks again, Noyrt..

Your OBD code reader is sufficient to read and clear emissions related faults. Typically a transmission fault will manifest itself in advising the engine ECU and therefore you are able to read.
No OBD reader will be able to read the transmission directly---for that you need a factory or equal reader
