E class 2.4
intermittent central locking fault

Hi ,
I have a strange fault on my E class 2.4 1998 . i have an intermittent problem with my central locking and electric windows which seems to appear after a period of cold/damp weather . the central locking refuses to work either RF or the sensor on doors , usually after using the metal key and getting in i can put key in ignition and car is ok after this and works again for some time until the fault occurs again . Also at same time the windows will not operate ( front only) and may not work for a few days and then start working again ..the fault developed further this morning where even after getting into car with metal key and starting the engine , the alarm kept going off and i could not operate central locking on the inside car switch ( usually can when fault arises) , as the alarm kept going off i disconnected battery, when i reconnected it everything worked fine ??? wierd , could it be a bad earth ?? someone suggested the SAM unit ?? does anyone know where this is located // thanks in advance for any help /advice . I am a new member so hope this post is ok
many thaks
Johnny
