Changing the oil sure was easy...but...

So I had a great experience changing the oil the first time in the E320, 2000. It was very easy, the filter was sooo easy in fact that I couldn't find it. I went online and duh, right in front...wow piece of cake. I drained everything was told that I needed to add 8.5 quarts...easy enough right...Did that used 0w-40 and lucas syn additive. So why do I have way too much oil in the car? I added 6qts of oil and 1qt of Lucas...is there a trick to draining all the oil out of the engine? Should I let is run as I drain...What I thought would be quick and easy has become a two day project! Any thoughts out there? thanks...

There are a couple ways to leave old oil in the engine, such as draining with the drain plug higher than other portions of the pan, and opening the filter after the drain plug is re-installed. The filter will only drain after air is admitted as you unscrew the cap. Some oil is likely left behind in an oil cooler and can not be easily drained. In the future add about 5 quarts and check the dip stick. Then add carefully to near the full mark. And why would you use a high dollar 0W oil and then add a thickener?
