W210 E200
Question Advice on purchase

Hey there!

We're looking at buying a 1998 W210 E200 Elegance. It has 150K on the clock and the guy wants NZ$4750 for it. Does that sound like a fair price?

We've had a drive of her - and it's gorgeous as you'd expect. It has AMG wheels on it as well. And no badging on the back. ;-)

Any thing we should look out for in particular? Does the M111 have a timing belt or chain?

Seems like a nice car, check for rust, biggest issue. I got my 2002 e430 sport about 2 months ago for $5,000 it was from a family friend. It has 33k miles now.

Thanks!

Thanks for your comment - it is a lovely car.

We had a pre-purchase inspection done yesterday and they found:

*A/c not cold. $250-800 (if just regas or if something is cracked)
*Drive belt starting to crack. $150 parts and labour
*Rear brake hose starting to perish. $300 parts and labour
*Front brake rotors worn, (lip on rotor) $290-500 (if skim or need replacing)

Nothing really terminal then. Negotiating with the owner at the moment. Also discovered the AMG wheels aren't genuine but I've found a real set for $700 (including new Falken tyres) to swap on if we go ahead with the purchase.

I as well am due for new discs soon, an aux conversion, and other minor things. I also got some w211 e55 wheels too, it makes a big difference, at first i was gonna go for the monoblocks, but my uncle had a free set of wheels laying around. Im extremely happy with my car it does everything i want it to. Goodluck!
