2000 320cdi auto selector
hoping someone can point me in the right direction. i will start by giving a list of the problems that are connected with my auto selector.
1) sometimes the the gauge in the dash that shows what gear you're in is blank
2)sometimes difficult to move selector out of park
3)sometimes when in park, dash gauge will show R and will not allow car to start
4)moving selector from D to R will only do it if foot off the brake pedal.
to do my head in even more sometimes it works absolutely perfect but i don't want to run the risk of getting stranded somewhere.

Sounds like a faulty gear selector lever switch!!
Your problem is how, without the proper test equipment do I confirm that----or do I just change out the switch because some chump on the forum thinks it is faulty!!

where is the gear selector lever switch?i am hoping it is something outside of the selector unit the reason i say this is because this is a replacement selector unit but is displaying probs sometimes similar to the one it replaced.the last one i pulled the lever so hard it snapped, forcing me to replace, i also assumed it was a plug and play, but am now not so sure.

The switch is apart of the gear selector assembly---not outside---also suggest you reread the five words past the first comma in post 2---then write the words down and scotch tape to your gear selector!!----then five times each day for a week read the words out loud---by the second week, have you received an answer!!
