1997 W210 E320 (Avantgarde)
Headlight!!!

Hello friends, i have a 1997 w210 e320 avantgarde, i got normal bulbs on it for headlights. I want to go for hid, do i need to buy canbus hid kit or normal one can do the job? if i put normal hid kit, does it send lamp defective error?
thanks

difficult to say because the triggering of the 'lamp malfunction' warning isn't
solely reliant on the HID bulb, but the ballast (as well). for example my car
is the US 1999 model and I used the original equipment Hella ballast used in
the 210 HID headlight system. i reused a w210 E55 projector and D2S Philips
bulb. all this was fitted into an Asian projector headlight assembly. it does not
trigger canbus/lamp malfunction warning.

so it's the overall electrical load to the system which determines whether the
warning is activated. apparently my combination of parts may be less efficient
and still had a higher resistance which appears to fall within the parameters which
do not trigger the warning.

other people performing HID kit retrofits will install capacitors or resisters into the
headlight wiring in an attempt to fool the warning system. others may take
their car to the dealer to have handshaking performed, introducing the car
parameters to the HID now incorporated into the car

@raymond g

Thanks mate. therefore it will be better to go for canbus hid kit.
another question, if i use normal hid kit together with a error cancellation flicker, will it be good? that is not sending lamp defective error?

cannot say conclusively one way or the other. like I said, it all comes down to
the parts which are being used and as far as I know, no one has cataloged the
various combinations. it's near impossible given the variety of parts out there.

HID kits are nearly always *******ized grafting of D2S bulb onto the base of the
bulb your car uses, in this case, an H7 bulb base with a D2S bulb. the original
equipment bulbs from the big lighting companies only build them on D2S bases.

There are many links to HID retrofit threads on Benzworld - in the w210 forum
which you may want to review first. The quality of the light beam is generally...

quite poor - if you use an HID kit into a halogen reflector. much uncontrolled glare

pretty poor - if you use an HID kit into an aftermarket projector headlight.
uncontrolled glare

better - replace your halogen headlight with MB design HID using reflector

best - replace your halogen headlight with aftermarket projector assembly, BUT
to toss the aftermarket projector and customize it to adapt an quality OE
projector from one of the big name car manufacturers such as MB, Acura, Nissan etc

you can also save money and install a higher wattage halogen bulb which we find in the US called
Rallye bulb. this is 10 watts over the normal H7 bulb (65 instead of 55) and get brighter halogen
beam and is the lowest cost and direct plug in. in fact, you can buy 4 Osram rallye bulbs and
insert them into both low and high beams as they're all H7 bulbs.
