1997 E280 not shifting gears - help

Hi. My 1997 Mercedes suddenly couldn't shift automatically just increasing revs when I put my foot down. After following the help from this site I opened my connector and found it completely flooded with oil and I cleaned up the harness and installed a new connector and indy mechanic (used to work for Mercedes) drained the ATF and put new transmission oil and when we tested it we found the problem is still persistent. Now I have the following questions:

(1) Suppose the flooded connector caused the electric limp mode, does cleaning the harness and putting a new connector make my car shift perfectly or I still have to clear the error codes on a Star machine?
(2) If I had just cleared the codes without fixing the flooded connector, was the car going to go out of limp mode and shift normally even though the initial problem is still prevalent?
(3) What the safest maximum distance I can drive the car while its in safe mode without causing damage to the engine, say while driving at 40km/h?

Thanks in advance.

Answers to the litany as follows:

(1) I doubt the flooded connector was the primary cause of limp--what you should have done---- read the transmission faults---that is the starting point for repair!

(2)Possibly

(3)You will damage the transmission if you do what you propose

The previous owner of my E430 had similar problems to what you are having. He took it to a tranny shop and had the shifter control module replaced and the car reprogrammed.

Good luck.
