I used to tow W123, W124, and W126 cars pretty often on a dolly. I was told to have the engine running if possible, in neutral, and tow no faster than 45 MPH.
Apparently the engine turning will pump transmission fluid to keep things happy. If the engine wasn't running, we usually hired a roll-back. I have towed short distances with the engine not running.
I can't say for sure if the W210 cars are similar, or if what I was told was even correct. Sorry for the non answer.
