Rear differential, '98 E320 4Matic
Rear differential is leaking, builds pressure when I drive it, thought I heard something like a pressure release sound as I pulled into the garage a few days ago, so now I wonder if the oil is being forced out the seals because the breather (wherever it is) is not functioning. Is it safe to drive it fifty miles to the dealer?
Can't seem to find any specifics on any breather or vent for the rear differential, and I'm guessing it is probably out of my realm to try and fix the problem anyway, but I don't want to do anything to make things worse.
Advice please?

Out Of Control!!
Once again I am amazed that by searching you can't determine whether you have a breather----you do, it's a threaded type which means that you can change. With the rear jacked up look at the rear passanger side of the differential---wada see besides dirt??
Now if you were really smart you would subscribe to MB EPC---it's free and then you and the grand kids can play go find the differential breather part number.
In sumation, yes it is safe to drive as long as long as there is fluid in the differential---two--you learned that you have a differential breather and location--you learned the part number for the breather---you learned that by subscribing to MB EPC you can learn much about your car--

Thank you Plutoe, appreciate the useful info. Did not know about MB EPC, nor had I run across any reference to it by searching, so happy to know there is such a resource.
Have no grandkids and don't understand your reasons for repeatedly being so sarcastic/mean when you make replies, or maybe it is just dark humor, but whatever, it is nice to get some pertinent information, so thanks!
