1997 E-320 a/c acting weird.

Hi there,

Before posting I have been searching for a month and couldn’t find anything on this issue.

This all happened after my battery died. I got a new battery from a local dealer and after that it started. A/C control unit works fine for a minute or tw0 after each start of an engine. By default it blows from central vents and side vents. After a minute central vent closes and air starts blowing form the dash under the windshield and the from side vents. At this time control units to switch different vent doesn’t work. I have tried every possible suggestion like reset battery, reset Control unit, no faulty codes except dash board temperature sensor. I would really appreciate any suggestions. Thank you in advance

I needed that to correctly identify the AC SA code which is 581 and therefore you have the digital AC control and therefore you can do the AC actual value, Fault\Flap test.

All these test should be in the stickies---do the tests and post the data(yes it will take your time repeat your time to do the tests) and you will get help.

PS: If not in the stickies simply google the tests

I did the fault / Flap test and after 30 40 seconds it started to do the same. Nothing works and it blow from left and right vents as well as from under the windsheild. I dont know if this would get me any help. Thank you anyways!

Well thank you for being helpful---however you did not follow the instructions---let me repeat------"do the tests and post the data"---once you do that folks can help, but without the data my suggestion is sell the car or drive the car into the river!!

The issue is with 7 should be 15 to 17 bar plus your refrig temp is low for the pressure tested, should be 125(F)

Therefore if you are full then the compressor can't make pressure and thats why there is a cooling issue. If you are not full you have a leak--then fix leak and fill to required amounts!!

Have someone put a set of gages on the car---he will know what to do!!

I was driving when I got the reply to my data and checked immidiatly the # 7 and I see different number so once I got home I did another test and here are the new numbers Weird as # 7 now shows much higher. It was 97 degree outside (LA). Prior test was in the morning and outside was 75 degree.

1-33
2-39
3-14
4-14
5-14
6-102
7-20 ( while I was drivng I checked this and it was changing from 15-19 but when i performed the test parked it showed 20)
8-61 ( I guess i still have to check the compressor?)
9-07
10-4.5

Also I want to clarify when you say I'm having cooling issue. My cooling is fine but the problem is that it blows from left , right and under the windshield after minute or two and you cant open or close any flaps once it starts blowing from above indicated locations. Thank you again and I hope I'm not boring while repeating all these issues.

Ok, lets forget about any issues with the degree of cooling and focus on the distribution of the AC air-----that is controlled by your AC controller and flaps should open and close depending on the button you push----a front example would be AC on auto--- 80 percent of the cool air is distributed to the center vents and the balance side vents-----this is just the opposite in heating as you want the heated air on the driver and passenger----those flap operations are all preprogrammed in to the AC controller--however the flaps on yours and mine are opened and closed with pressure and vaccum air.

I would find in the stickies the flap test--it's long but then you will earn the issues with the flaps.

In any eventI also believe you have a cooling issue as epresented in the test data!!

I did the flap test again and in the begning it works but as you move forward to other steps the blowing switches by it self to right left and under windshield. When this first happened I accessed under glove compartment to figure out what is going on. It was preety obvious that once you turn the ignition on center flapts got open and air blowes as it supposed to do. After a minute or so I see that center flaps getting closed by them selfs and cool air gets blowing fromm under the windsheild, left, ight. My assumption is that each time turning off the ignition key and turning back on it resets the central flaps to default and then after a minute or so those vent close by them selfs and controlers stop working. I want to mention that only flap controlers doesnt work once it happenes, adjusting the vent speed, temperature, carocal filter, etc works fine. I beliave recirculation also doesnt work at that time. Any how I guess this would stay a mystery as car is old but I love my car. I'm the 2nd owner since 2003 when it had 20K miles. It is 197K right now and I kept it very well.

I heard that somethings need to be reprogrammed when you replace. Is it.? I replaced the blower while ago (at one point MBZ upgraded so i have the latest one). I also bought a used vacume pump last year (from the exact same year model) since mine started giving issues with a door locks.
