E300 Turbodiesel Inspection

Hi everyone,

Currently driving my friend's 1998 E300 Turbodiesel since my 335i is in the shop getting some work done (flamesuit on).

He recently bought the car, it has ~169K miles on it, and I figure that when my mechanic has completed the work on BMW, he can do an oil change on the E300 and give it the once over as a thank you to my friend for lending me this car.

There is some rattling/creaking in the front left suspension area-prominently at turning, braking and accelerating very low speeds (under 10mph). I had read that is attributed to a front link issue which isn't too bad.

Other than that, are there any other issues that should be looked at? Not familiar with the W210-I'm more familiar with the W123 diesels so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Also, I am absolutely loving this W210! Nice bottom end torque, solid build, comfortable, decent handling and suprisingly, a decent OEM stereo! Makes me miss the Mercedes Benzes my parents used to own back in the day! I may offer to buy his car or look for one myself as a daily driver!

Hey dbldpr,

Thanks for the compliment. That '69 Camaro sounds pretty awesome, man! I love classic American heavy metal!

The rattling noise you are hearing could be the sway bar link.

-Check to make sure you have the metal retaining clips on the brake calipers. That can cause rattling and is an easy fix. They can come off if not properly installed.
-ball joints go on these cars and can make similar noises.
-If the main bushing for the lower control arm has never been replaced then that might be a culprit
-Bearings can go, but that would be more of a whirring noise you'd hear.

Hi Ed,

Thanks for the input! I'll have them check that out for me.

Well, got my BMW back and brought my friend's car to my mechanic for an oil change and I asked him to examine the car for my friend to see if anything else needs to be attended to.

Not a whole lot has to be addressed! Just the following:

I'll let him know about what you recommended, Kajtek1, as it sounds like a great preventative measure!

I also picked up a new fuel tank cap from the dealer to replace his, as it was completely rusty and hard to remove. Though I have noticed it is already starting to corrode!

I'll be sad to give back the E300 to my friend tonight, as I really enjoyed driving it! It was pretty strange to be back in my 335i (other than reaching for the controls in the wrong area after getting used to the Mercedes)-the Benz was far more comfortable and plush, whereas my car is definitely stiffer. Driver inputs are quite different as well, obviously, because they're 2 different cars with different missions.

Quite honestly, I would love to find one similar to the car I had, as a daily driver-given the comfort, the automatic transmission, fuel efficiency, decent power and reliability. It's quite still a handsome and classy car!
